Union Contracts at DC Metro Campuses

In the DC area, SEIU members have made significant gains by organizing to win better pay, benefits, and job security for contingent faculty. SEIU Local 500 represents 2,400 part-time professors at George Washington University, American University, and Montgomery College. Contingent faculty at Georgetown University filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board on March 23rd to form a union.

On Friday, May 3, 2013 the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) counted the votes for the Georgetown University Adjunct Faculty Union election. The vote was overwhelmingly in favor of the union, with 72% of the vote in support of forming a union. Adjuncts and Georgetown University have begun negotiating their first contract.

Salary Increases- all adjuncts in each institution have received pay increases since the formation of their union.

Job security – through protections on being re-appointed, access to academic freedom, and a “just cause” standard on discipline and dismissal part-time faculty are now much more secure in their jobs.
